There are many fairs about LED products to offer the led tubes information to the people who want to know about, few days ago, LEDs Magazine held light fair on the tradeshow floor, it’s an elevated pace for both attendees and exhibitors, so it attracted thousands of people to attend, they can get the latest information from this fair. During the fair, the LED suppliers discussed the changes to Energy Star criteria, in the meantime, the Environmental Protection Agency call on the manufacturers to meet with the Energy Star lighting team. In addition, the development of LED T8 light is also the focus.
On the topic of LED T8 replacement lamps, during his luncheon keynote presentation on Tuesday, the DOE’s Jim Brodrick again reinforced that this product has not demonstrated the performance necessary to be regarded as a serious contender with respect to luminous efficacy, lifetime and definitely cost.
Attendees learned what was happening back in the ‘Big Apple’ as Margaret Newman presented ‘Transforming New York City Streetscapes’ with Marc Ledbetter from PNNL, who manages the DOE Gateway Demonstration Program and Philip Jessup from The Climate Group, facilitator of the global LightSavers Program. All panellists dealing with the New York LED piloting presented their respective observations and conclusions to date. Issues in LED outdoor lighting are not always technically related. Marc Ledbetter revealed the ‘dirt’ on depreciation, as dirt itself reduces light output and must be considered. As LED requires less replacement maintenance, dirt build-up due to lesser frequent cleaning from not making the more frequent current technology lamp replacement is an issue. Ledbetter also noted that wind can play a role in tripping sensors that are intended to only react to the presence of people or vehicles in attempting to control lighting when not in use at full levels. Ledbetter also reinforced that everyone benefits from good analysis, while everyone suffers when I is poorly done.
Recapping some previous industry media events, on Wednesday, Nexxus unveiled is new Array Par 38 lamp and GE gave an overview of its direction in replacement lamp products. Attendees to the GE event heard that we would not see the ‘birth’ of the high-efficiency incandescent lamp from GE.
At a Traxon/Osram Sylvania event, Rick Leaman, Osram Sylvania President and CEO discussed his company’s announcement earlier in the day to launch the first 75-watt, A-line LED retrofit, the brightest LED replacement bulb on the market according to Leaman. Leaman displayed the 60-watt version of that bulb at the event.

8:30 am – Edison Was Right: DC Optimized Lighting Grids Can Save Power
Alternating current (AC) is the global standard for electrical lighting today. Yet, today’s AC mains have not served as an effective medium for digital communications, and attempts to communicate on AC wiring have proven to be difficult, complex, and unreliable. Yet, LED lighting requires DC current, which could also provide a unique “network” to interconnect lights. The vision is to transform lighting spaces by integrating a DC grid to optimize how lights are controlled, dimmed, and managed. This digital systems’ approach to lighting could dramatically improve energy efficiency, and deliver a finer-grained, enhanced lighting space.
8:30 am – Taking Best Practices to the Mainstream
The pressures of climate change have made sustainable buildings a necessity. Must we compromise lighting quality or will we leapfrog into an improved mainstream approach? The USDOE Commercial Lighting Solutions help A&E teams and end users by providing best practice guidance via an interactive webtool that measures energy savings and provides actionable implementation guidance. Nationally known IALD lighting designers developed the solutions using high performance commercial products, daylighting and controls. GSA has stepped up to the challenge by using these solutions as the basis for their relighting projects under the Recovery Act.
The importance of LED light fair needs no more words, first, the purchasers can touch with the LED suppliers directly and communicate with them deeply, it offers a good opportunity to both suppliers and purchasers to deal with some problems face to face, it helps to make the problems be solved easily, in addition, there will be some samples or new products of LED in the fair, people can know about the products veritably and get the latest information. For example, if you want to know the latest information about LED T8 tube lighting, it won’t let you be disappointed. So the organizers pay attention to the fairs and expand them.

Most of us heard of LED ever, but maybe seldom do us know much about the importance of LED drivers for LED products, there are two types of LED drivers: isolation and non isolation, what’s the difference between them, in short, the non isolation is limited to the double insulated products, such as the substitutes of bulb, in that led tubes are sealed in non-conductive plastics, there is no danger of electric shock eventually; the isolation means that you can touch LED without electric shock. Maybe this answer is too general for us to know more about LED drivers, please look below and notice how they work while the LED tubes are operating.
At present,in the main LED lighting market, there are two types of led drivers, such as isolation and non isolation. Non isolated design only refers to insulation products, such as the replacement of fluorescent lamps, led and the whole products are integrated and enclosed within the non-conductive casing, therefore, the end user has no danger of electric shock. Secondary products are isolated, the price is relatively expensive, but the user could touch led and the output wiring place ( usually in the LED lighting and street lighting), this product will be the trend of the future.
A. ISOLATED TYPE LED TUBE LAMP WILL BECOME THE MAINSTREAM
LED drive power with isolation transformers or electrical isolationmeans that LED can be directly touched by hands without electric shock. LED driver without isolation transformer still can be used as insulation mechanically by means of protective shell, but at this time LED can not be directly touched while it is working.
At present, most drivers we use are the lowered voltage power supply, which was Alternating current rectifier to obtain DC high voltage, and then directly using antihypertensive ( Buck ) circuit pressure and constant current control it. Because the non isolated power to AC power voltage into the end of the load, thus causing a risk of electric shock. Usually the insulation between LED T8 replacement lamps and aluminum radiator relies on aluminum substrate for printed circuit board to realize insulation. Although the insulating layer can withstand high voltage 2000V, but sometimes the burrs of screw hole can produce the electricity phenomenon, which makes it difficult to be demonstrated by CE.
Isolation type is to use transformer to isolate the input end and the output end so as to achieve isolation, this transformer may be frequent or not. But it could isolate from the input to the output so as to avoid the risk of electric shock. In general, because of the adding the insulation of the transformer, so isolated power efficiency will be lower, usually about 88% or so. And the volume of the transformer is relatively large. It would be OK to put into T10 lamp , but it would be more difficult to put into T8 lamp.
B. LED DRIVING POWER BASED ON THE ISOLATING TRANSFORMER TYPE WILL BE THE MAINSTREAM
Isolated and non-isolated LED drive power schemes have their own advantages and disadvantages. We think, ClassII will be the mainstream, because it simplifies the LED heat problems. ClassI or II system depends on grounding system, in most cases, there is a relationship with the installation site. ClassII is more common, it requires double or reinforced insulation, namely magnetic winding transformer, insulating tape and physical isolation. The ClassI system requires a grounding shell and ( or ) mechanical barrier, while the ClassII system does not need.
Chinese DALI POWER puts forward led isolated tube drivers to meet the market demand of LED isolate Scalpel + LED TUBE driver for led tube lamp:
1) products using ultra-thin design, the thickness of the led drivers is only 8MM, output power: 10-36W; output voltage output current:: 30-50V; 200-700MA, high reliability.
2) energy efficient: efficiency of 91%, PF0.95, temperature rise of 10 degrees. Far more than China and the European Union and others, 91% first level energy efficiency standards;
3) meets energy star and CE electrical compulsory standards, especially the EMC corresponding to the GB17743 IEC6100, THD GB17625.1-2003 harmonic current corresponding to IEC61000-3-2: 2001, which requires the power to have good EMC, PFC / THD.
In conclusion, Dali Power Scalpel + LED TUBE driver, having solved user’s personal and public safety in the application of technology in many safety problems.
No matter the isolation or the non isolation, both of them are important to LED products, after all, the types of LED are different and we may face various situations, therefore, most LED tube lighting suppliers think highly of drivers. For example, the whole working will be in vain if there is a fault of drivers, it also shows that as a businessman, you must take various aspects into account, don’t merely look out for only one aspect if you want to achieve success, otherwise, the fault of drivers not only influences the quality of LED T8 tube lighting, so much so that it will influence the whole operation of a company.
We wish our behaviors have no harm to our environment, that’s the reason why we invent better products to overcome the disadvantages, the same reason for inventing LED tubes . We can see as there is an unprecedented level of interest and effort focused on implementing “green” designs for sustainable building today, LED tube light, such as LED T8 light may play a more important role in lighting. Compared to conventional fluorescent lights, advantages claimed for LED tube lamps are that they contain no mercury.
With the advent of LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL), companies and individuals can slash greenhouse-gas emissions while positively impacting the financial bottom line. Indeed, while LED lighting costs more than other technologies, savings in energy and maintenance costs more than cover the upfront premium. And with LED tube lamps dropping in price, SSL becomes more of a bargain every day.
The supposedly green, environmentally-friendly CFLs contain mercury, albeit a small amount. A fact sheet about CFLs from the US Environmental Protection Agency notes that, “Exposure to mercury, a toxic metal, can affect our brain, spinal cord, kidneys and liver, causing symptoms such as trembling hands, memory loss, and difficulty moving.” It goes on to add that, “Mercury is released into our environment when products with mercury are broken, disposed of improperly, or incinerated. If you break a CFL, clean it up safely.”
Many states, cities and counties have outlawed the disposal of CFLs in the trash. Does anyone actually believe that CFLs survive intact in a landfill after a bulldozer has compacted the load into place? This assumes, of course, that a CFL actually arrives at a landfill in one piece.
LED Downlight , conversely, is poised to deliver on energy savings with a positive environmental impact. With LED tube light, businesses can reduce costs and not have to be concerned about proper disposal because the lights can be recycled.
Another obvious advantage of LED tube lamps is the long lifespan promoted by technology. With a minimum life of 50,000 hours, LED tube lamps last five times longer than their nearest competitors. When compared with incandescent lamps (average life of 2,000 hours) the disparity is even more remarkable. Given their solid-state circuitry, LED tube lamps are very durable. It takes a lot more than accidentally dropping or hitting an LED light to render it inoperable.
One of the major advantages of LED tube lamps is that they can be placed in hard-to-reach locations that are sometimes accessible only with special lifts or scaffolding. Once in place, it will be years before these lights will need to be changed. Often, businesses wait until the number of burned-out light bulbs reaches critical mass before making replacements. And then, usually, all of the bulbs, including those that are still working, are replaced at the same time. The longevity aspect of LED tube lamps can save businesses thousands of dollars in maintenance costs, not to mention operating costs from reduced electricity usage.
The decrease in electricity usage can actually have a double benefit in some situations. LED tube lamps are often eligible for rebates and other cash incentives provided by governmental agencies and public utilities, thereby greatly reducing their cost of ownership. Another economic advantage of LED tube light for businesses is that due to their long lives, the initial cost can be capitalized on a company’s balance sheet and depreciated over a period of five to ten years. This is an important feature for publicly-traded companies because it can significantly decrease operating costs which, of course, increases reported net income.
The reduction in energy use has another benefit. For example, T8 LED Tube is the latest LED-based T8 tube in the ATG Electronics product lineup. It combines numerous practical and technical advantages in one product and is rightly considered the best solution on the market for the replacement of conventional fluorescent tubes. As less electricity must be produced, less coal must be burned in coal-fired power plants to supply that electricity. A significant amount of electricity produced in the United States comes from burning coal. This means that as less electricity is used, less coal is burned, and therefore less carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas), sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, and mercury are emitted to the environment.Mandarin school shanghai
LED tube light offers an energy-efficient, low maintenance form of indication or illumination. The foregoing discussion demonstrates that their characteristics also make them very easy to integrate successfully into a circuit design. Providing some simple design rules are observed, these components will provide long term, reliable service. Conscious about our natural environment, we had better choose LED tube lamps, such as LED T8 replacement lamps . That’s one way to protect environment with a daily consideration.
1858, English Joseph Wilson swan created the first carbon silk lamp in the world, but it was too expensive. Finally Edison invented the first utilitarian lamp after a trial-and-error process.in 1879. From then on, the ordinary people entered the age of lamp and electric. These days, lamp contains various types, such as fluorescent. But LED fluorescent lamps are under way while during the age of advocating environmental protection.
Cree is making bold claims about the products relative to the LED fluorescent lamps. Vice President of Market Development Gary said, “Our lowest efficacy product is better than the best 2×4 linear fluorescent fixture available today.” And about the luminaire design, Trot asserts that the optical efficiency for the fixture is 90%.
Trot provided a more detailed assessment of the CR series relative to the most efficient LED fluorescent lamps that are often referred to as Super T8s. He said the Cree products are 5 to 25% more efficient or can deliver the same light output using 5 to 25% less power.
The luminaires use a single row of led fluorescent
mounted in the center of the heat sink and the brighter output versions utilize a greater number of LEDs. The design uses Cree’s True White technology that mixes light from yellow and red LEDs to deliver consistent color and the choice of color temperature.
The thermal design allows the LEDs to run cooler than competitive designs according to Cree and the fixtures are designed for 50,000 hours of life. The luminaires include a driver that supports both step and 0-10V dimming.
Price and payback
The luminaires don’t come cheap, but buyers will consider the price relative to energy and maintenance savings and the payback that they project. Trot expects the price to the end user for the CR family fixtures to be in the $200 to $300 range. He said that price is “in line with high-end architectural fluorescents.”
Cree provided an example payback calculation for the CR24 relative to a LED fluorescent tubes T8 .The comparison is based on a rather-lengthy 12-hour usage day and energy cost of $0.10 kWh, Including energy savings, lower HVAC energy usage due to less heat from the lights, and maintenance savings, Cree projects payback inside a year. With a shorter usage day the payback period could grow to 2 years or more. Mandarin school shanghai
Cree already has some pilot customers that confirm the payback story. “We chose the Cree CR troffers because the payback calculation was clear,” said Richard J. Michal PE, MBA, LEED-AP, Facilities Engineer Planning Design and Construction, Butler University. “Seeing the CR troffers installed, they have an elegant aesthetic that produces an incredibly high-quality light. When you combine that with our predicted energy and maintenance savings, it was a no-brainer.”
Cree clearly believes that the time is here for broad replacement of LED fluorescent lamps. “You never need to install fluorescent troffer lighting again,” said Chuck Slobodan, Cree Chairman and CEO. “The traditional lighting experts keep telling us what LEDs can’t do, and we keep showing them that anything is possible. We think it is time to rid the world of the compromises inherent in choosing fluorescent lighting—the flickering, toxic mercury, poor color, ineffective dimming and disposal expense.”
Cree has repeatedly said that its mission in lighting is more to point the way for the industry and boost its sales of LED components. Swoboda emphasized that approach in a speech we covered this past December. Yet these new luminaires are clearly to be sold into volume production.
Trot offered some insight into Cree’s thinking, saying, “We want to show the way to an inflection point. Customers will now convert big projects to LEDs. The inflection point is driven by price and performance. Trot said, “You have to get to the point where you have the right combination of price and performance that really prompts broad deployment.”
For now, Cree is not pushing its linear fixtures into the more cost competitive industrial markets where lower-priced fixture is prevalent. That’s certainly one target for the host of companies offering LED-based replacement of LED fluorescent tubes for T8s. But as the DOE has documented repeatedly in Caliper testing, those tubes aren’t yet capable LED fluorescent replacement
It’s not clear when or if Cree might target that market. Trot noted the complexity of selling retrofit lamps that require rewiring or removing the ballast. Trot did say, “In some ways, replacing the entire fixture is easier than rewiring for a ballast and LED fluorescent replacement and you don’t have a UL problem.” It seems that Cree views purpose-built fixtures a better approach than replacement of LED fluorescent tubes
Nowadays more than a century has elapsed after the invention of lighting. In work and in life or something else, we can’t do without it, it was so important. Lighting makes it convenient for our daily life, meanwhile lighting itself come up to maturity. During this time, environmental protection needs to be taken into consideration. LED fluorescent lamp, as one of the LED products, is more energy-saving and greener than the ordinary fluorescent. So the LED fluorescent replacement is very necessary.
The led technology is developed quickly, relevant equipment’s are improving all the time, so the performance of led also need to be improved correspondingly. On the other hand, facing such a mature technology, the citizens never change their high demands to it. Therefore, US DOE and relevant personnel devoted themselves to study of the weakness of led technology. After many tests, they made big progress and found some measures to make UL LED tube light more perfect. Now almost all the fluorescent light is applied by led, so this program.
In a session entitled “State of the industry and market forecast,” Jim Broderick, lighting program manager at the US Department of Energy (DOE), was the lead speaker at the LEDs 2011 conference in San Diego, CA. Broderick described applications where LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL) is already succeeding as well as the technology shortcomings that are limiting the usage of LEDs in other applications.
Immediately Broderick pinpointed the reason for the DOE’s interest in SSL and investment in the technology. Quoting a DOE report issued earlier this year, as is well-known that the led fluorescent replacement is an old topic; Broderick said that LEDs could yield 233 Tw in energy savings per year if LED lights totally replaced legacy sources in a short list of seven lighting applications – enough energy to power 19 million households.
Purpose-built luminaires
Broderick made a general statement about midway through his presentation that summed up the state of the SSL industry. About LED lighting products, he said, “If you design from a clean sheet of paper, you can come up with products that are really very good.” He added that good designs must address all aspects of a luminaire including LED chips, optics, electronics, thermal management, and mechanical design.
It’s easy to see where Broderick’s statement applies in readily available products. LED-based tubes intended as replacements for linear fluorescent lamps are still struggling to match the incumbent technology. In contrast, Broderick said that several LED-based integral luminaires that are designed to replace tube-based troffer fixtures – as opposed to just replacing the tubes – can match or exceed the performance of fluorescent technology.
In general, Broderick said that SSL is doing extremely well in recessed down lights, outdoor area lights, 2×2-ft proffers (not tube based) and refrigerated-case lights. The technology isn’t doing nearly so well in small retrofit lamps including A lamps, the aforementioned linear-replacement segment, and cove lighting especially in cases where the legacy luminaires utilize LED Down light
.LED retrofit lamps
Broderick spent more time discussing the problematic applications, acknowledging the continued interest in LED-based 4-ft tubes given the huge installed base of fluorescent troffers. He said the tubes are getting better and beginning to match the efficacy of fluorescents. But light output and distribution remain a problem as directional LEDs isn’t a good match for fluorescent fixtures that were designed for a tube that radiates light around the entire cylinder.
Still, Broderick said the LED tubes are beginning to work for some applications in terms of light output and cost. Specifically he said that the long life of LEDs make the tubes a fit for hard-to-reach applications. He also said the LED tubes are a good choice where vibration is present or in temperature extremes.
In the area of small replacement lamps including ubiquitous A lamps, Broderick said that the technology is getting better although he said, “generally they don’t match the output, color quality, and light distribution” of incandescent sources.
Broderick described a recent DOE test of led fluorescent replacement in which the agency visited eight big-box retail stores in the US and purchased 33 LED lamp products to test. He said that most failed to meet basic performance parameters that would satisfy consumers looking to replace incandescent or halogen lamps.
About the retailers, Broderick said, “Some carry better products than others.” The DOE hasn’t identified the retailers in a publicly-available report, but Broderick said the DOE had taken up the matter directly with the retailers to discuss the issue of consumer satisfaction with LED lamps.
Tackling roadblocks
Broderick concluded by discussing some items that the SSL industry needs to address across the entire application landscape. He said that despite the finalization of the TM-21 standard to project LED life, the industry continues to struggle to differentiate between lumen depreciation and luminaire life. We covered that very topic in the article ” Understanding the difference between LED rated life and lumen-maintenance life” published in the October 2011 issue of LEDs Magazine. The DOE is working on the problem in conjunction with the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance and has published a paper focused on LED luminaire lifetime and reporting.
In terms of color quality, Broderick said that the LED makers have made significant improvements and that tighter binning is a great benefit to luminaire makers. But he also said, “Color shifts over time are not well understood or predictable.” He suggested more research is needed on the topic. Mandarin school shanghai
Brighter LEDs are also desirable of course. The DOE continues to raise lumen output and efficacy goals in its SSL Multi-Year Program Plan. In terms of efficacy, Broderick said, “We’re going for 258 lm/W.” That’s the goal for cool-white LEDs by 2020. For comparison, incandescent lamps are around 12 lm/W.
This research and test is not easy, such as this study involved in various technologies, it needs high accuracy, ensured that we must get the truest answer and make the exacts optimization. So all the personnel hold a responsibility for customers, hashed and tested for many times to make each place more perfect. In the meantime, relevant personnel’s efforts to the led function bring some business opportunities to the led suppliers. All in all, everyone believes in cost performance, the high replacement rate of fluorescent is a demonstration; obviously the UL LED tubes has good quality and are better and the old ones.
Although the led technology is developed increasingly, everything has its shortages. in addition, relevant equipment’s are improving all the time, so the performance of led also need to be improved correspondingly.
Quoting a DOE report issued earlier this year, as is well-known that the led fluorescent replacement is an old topic, Brodrick said that LEDs could yield 233 Tw in energy savings per year if LED lights totally replaced legacy sources in a short list of seven lighting applications – enough energy to power 19 million households.
In general, Broderick said that SSL is doing extremely well in recessed downlights, outdoor area lights, 2×2-ft proffers (not tube based) and refrigerated-case lights.
